server the same as web hosting?

I’m going to make a facebook app (wish me luck)
and I noticed they access a server that I would be responsible,
is a server the same as just web hosting?
like can I just upload my app to a web hosting company or is server hosting different?
thanks

(i just don’t want to invest in another computer just to be used as a server and suck up my bandwidth)

Short answer, “yes”. They’re virtually the same.

  2. it depends on what you need your app to do.

Web hosting is a service that a server can provide. But a server can provide a lot of other services.

When getting web hosting what you get is access to some of the different services on the hosting companies server. As the hosting company’s server provides the services you need.

    Examples of services:
    webspace
    php
    mysql
    asp.net
    pop3 email
    ftp
    perl
    python
    ruby
    dns

as long as the hosting company provides the service you need, there is no need to invest in a server of your own. The only advantage of having your own server is the ability to decide freely what services you want to install on it.

  3. A web hosting would be fine for your need. HostGator is one of the reputable ones.
